If you're NOT a skydiver, STOP posting idiotic comments about this video. You have know idea what you're talking about and you're making yourself look like an ass (and doing a tandem once doesn't make you a skydiver).
Skydiving itself is not dangerous, but idiots like the guy in the video make it dangerous. He shouldn't be banned from the sport, but he definetly should be grounded until he recieves further instruction. The instructors should not have cleared him to jump, as he obviously learned nothing from the 6 hour ground course.
You don't have to do a tandem before you do AFF (Accelerated FreeFall), but many people do.
That "computer thingy" is called an AAD, Automatic Activation Device. It automatically deploys the reserve if the skydiver is unable to. Depending on the model depends on how high the reserve is deployed. If it's the CYPRES Student, then it will open at 750ft AGL (above ground level) if the student is still in freefall.
The comentator is also an idiot; the student pulled between 5500 and 5000, giving him about 25 seconds till he hit the ground assuming he was also too stupid to turn on the AAD. Videos like this and ignorant wuffos give a bad name to the sport. I'm tired of it.

[quote: "Scott was doing a AFF, if he was new he should be doing a Tandem jump, not a AFF. Also we just out @ 15,000FT and we set the computer to deployed at 1500FT. Also it look like Scott pulled the Red Line, which you don't in case the main is mess up. But yea! "]
haha - you're an idiot and have no idea what you're talking about. Why post such abject nonsense? AFF is designed to be your first jump - there's no requirement to do a tandem first even though some instructors offer one.

Thank god this guy is never going to skydive again. If you watch the video in slow motion, you can see that he pulls his main-cutaway-handle and then the instructor deploys his main, and poof-it disapears!! duhhhh, lol. Then the narrarator says he has seconds until he goes "splat"...actually on an AFF jump, you pull at 5,000 feet, that means Scott actually had about 25 seconds to realize, "I don't have a main parachute, maybe I should pull this little silver handle." And for chrsit-sakes, even a retard can turn the parachute 5 feet to the right or left to avoid "crackling" power lines. Darwin at its best!! lol.

What a joke of a video, gotta agree with UK skydiver, him not jumping again has nothing to with him not wanting to do it, he would have been grounded straight away for pulling his cutaway pad instead of his chute, all the commentry is wrong, his ADD would have saved him and when it says 1000ft between him and the ground he's closer to 5000 from which height he would have had about 20 seconds to pull, doesnt sound like much but count it out and you've got plenty of time to do that 1 second thing. Hate seeing videos like this that will put people off such a great sport, i've seen reserves used and people go straight back up and jump again, a malfunction is unfortunate but by far the end of you.

I went SkyDiving, yea it was awesome, but crap happens.. But Scott was doing a AFF, if he was new he should be doing a Tandem jump, not a AFF. uk skydiver, I've never heard about that onboard computer thing. Is it standard in every parachute pack? I'm guessing not, but I know nothing about skydiving :)
