The HANS device is a kevlar/carbon fibre collar worn on the shoulders underneath the shoulder harness. The helmet is connected to it by short straps which stop the head moving so much in a heavy accident.

Dunno, but if i was to make a guess it would be a Head And Neck Support thingy but someone in the know could tell us
