I love the way the part of the waribashi ( chop sticks , stuck together ) which he is going to affect is ALWAYS over the gap on the table. I think the guy below was right : The gap on the table is the key. I'd say the people around him are also in on the act.

take a look at end of the stick on his left hand just when he is about to present the sticks, there is a thin line of thread connected at the end of it.
